Critical Layers in Shear Flows
نویسنده
چکیده
The normal mode approach to investigating the stability of a parallel shear flow involves the superposition of a small wavelike perturbation on the basic flow. Its evolution in space and/or time is then determined. In the linear inviscid theory, if ū(y) is the basic velocity profile, then a singularity occurs at critical points yc, where ū = c, the perturbation phase speed. This is plausible intuitively because energy can be exchanged most efficiently where the wave and mean flow are travelling at the same speed. The problem is of the singular perturbation type; when viscosity or nonlinearity, for example, are restored to the governing equations, the singularity is removed. In this lecture, the classical viscous theory is first outlined before presenting a newer perturbation approach using a nonlinear critical layer (i.e., nonlinear terms are restored within a thin layer). The application to the case of a density stratified shear flow is discussed and, finally, the results are compared qualitatively with radar observations and also with recent numerical simulations of the full equations. ∗Address for correspondence: Department of Mathematics and Statistics, McGill University, Montreal, QC, H3A 2K6, Canada. e-mail: [email protected]

Understanding critical layers in stratified shear flow instabilities: A wave interaction perspective
In this paper we examine the dynamics of unstable critical layers in stratified shear flows. This is done from the framework of the wave interaction theory of shear instabilities, which views instability as arising from the mutual interaction between wave motions that are present in the background shear and density fields. By formulating a simple analytical model of the structure of vorticity w...
متن کاملThree-dimensional vortices generated by self-replication in stably stratified rotating shear flows.
A previously unknown instability creates space-filling lattices of 3D vortices in linearly stable, rotating, stratified shear flows. The instability starts from an easily excited critical layer. The layer intensifies by drawing energy from the background shear and rolls up into vortices that excite new critical layers and vortices. The vortices self-similarly replicate to create lattices of tur...
متن کاملInstability Associated Baroclinic Critical Layers in Rotating Stratified Shear Flow
The notion of over-reflection has been used to rationalize the linear instability of shear flows that are directed and sheared in a horizontal plane but stratified and subject to rotation in the vertical. In the linear stability analysis of these types of flows, two types of critical levels may appear that translate to singular points in the corresponding differential eigenvalue problem. The fi...
متن کاملContinuum approach to wide shear zones in quasistatic granular matter.
Slow and dense granular flows often exhibit narrow shear bands, making them ill suited for a continuum description. However, smooth granular flows have been shown to occur in specific geometries such as linear shear in the absence of gravity, slow inclined plane flows and, recently, flows in split-bottom Couette geometries. The wide shear regions in these systems should be amenable to a continu...
متن کاملApplication of the Turbulent Potential Model to Complex Flows
The turbulent potential model is a RANS model that avoids modeling the Reynolds stress tensor. As a result it has the ability to obtain the physical accuracy of Reynolds stress transport equation models at a cost and complexity comparable to popular two equation models. The model’s ability to predict channel flow, free-shear layers, homogeneous shear flow, stagnation point flow, backward facing...

A method for performing anisotropic unstructured mesh adaptation is discussed that is well suited for computational fluid dynamics on parallel distributed memory computers. This algorithm which involves mesh motion, rather than refinement and coarsening, is fast, parallel, and fully conservative. The approach is effective at accurately capturing free-surface flows, boundary layers, and unsteady...
